This page covers the WatsWorthIt Chrome extension and this website. WatsWorthIt is made by Eric Zou, a student at the University of Waterloo. It is a student project and isn't affiliated with the University of Waterloo or WaterlooWorks. If anything here is unclear, email eric@ugmi.ca.

What the extension reads

The extension only runs on waterlooworks.uwaterloo.ca. It reads the job postings in the WaterlooWorks tab you're already logged into, so it can find the pay, the number of applications and openings, and the work arrangement for each job.

What the extension stores

Everything below is saved in your own browser with Chrome's local extension storage:

  • Your program, current term and completed work terms, if you enter them.
  • The postings you mark as Interested or Applied, and which postings you've opened.
  • Searches you save.
  • A copy of the details it read from each posting, so it doesn't have to read every posting again on your next visit.
  • A random install ID and the date you installed it, used only for the usage counts below.

What the extension sends

The extension sends an anonymous count when it's installed, when it reads a job board, when you mark a posting, once a day when you use it, and once a day if WaterlooWorks changes its page and the extension can't read it. Each count carries a random ID, the version number, the date you installed it and your browser's language setting. It never sends anything about the postings you look at, your searches or your settings. The counts go to Umami, a privacy-focused analytics service, and I use them only to see how many students use WatsWorthIt and whether they keep using it. Your data is not sold or shared, and there's no account.

Deleting your data

You can clear the saved posting details from the extension's popup. Uninstalling the extension deletes everything it stored, including the random ID, so a reinstall starts with a new one.

This website

This website has no analytics, cookies or forms. It loads its fonts from Google Fonts, so Google receives your IP address when you open a page, the same as on most websites.

Changes

If the extension ever starts collecting or sending anything new, this page will be updated first, and the date at the top will change.
